He was educated at Jamnabai Narsee School and Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai, followed by Aiglon College in Switzerland. He briefly attended Boston University before returning to India to pursue a career in films.
Bachchan made his acting debut in Refugee (2000), directed by J. P. Dutta, opposite Kareena Kapoor. While his early films met with mixed commercial response, he gradually established himself with performances in films across genres.
Abhishek Bachchan is involved in film production through the family-owned banner AB Corp Ltd (formerly Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited), one of India's earliest corporatised film production houses, founded in 1996.
He is the co-owner of the Indian Super League football club Chennaiyin FC and the Pro Kabaddi League franchise Jaipur Pink Panthers, the latter of which won the inaugural season of the league in 2014. He has also served as a brand ambassador and supporter of various sports initiatives in India.

As a second-generation actor in the Bachchan family, Abhishek Bachchan represents the continuity of one of Hindi cinema's most recognisable lineages. His career spans mainstream commercial blockbusters, parallel-style dramatic films, and digital streaming productions, reflecting the broader transitions in Indian film and entertainment over the 2000s, 2010s and 2020s.
