Background

The company traces its origins to the development of a captive jetty at Mundra on the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat during the 1990s, set up to handle cargo for group businesses. The facility was subsequently expanded into a full commercial port and corporatised. The Mundra site was later notified as a multi-product Special Economic Zone, combining port operations with industrial land, warehousing and related logistics services.

From its base at Mundra, APSEZ expanded along both the western and eastern coasts of India, operating a network of ports, terminals and inland logistics assets. Its operations cover bulk, container, liquid and automobile cargo, supported by rail linkages, container freight stations and inland container depots through subsidiary logistics businesses.

Operations

Ports and terminals

APSEZ operates a portfolio of ports and terminals along India's east and west coasts. Mundra remains its flagship facility and one of the largest commercial ports in India by cargo volume. Other significant operations include facilities at Hazira and Dahej in Gujarat, Mormugao in Goa, Dhamra in Odisha, Kattupalli and Ennore in Tamil Nadu, Krishnapatnam and Gangavaram in Andhra Pradesh, and Vizhinjam in Kerala.

Special Economic Zone

The Mundra SEZ is a multi-product zone offering serviced industrial land, utilities and port-side logistics for export-oriented units. It is one of the largest port-based SEZs in India.

Logistics

Through its logistics arm, the company operates rail-linked inland container depots, multi-modal logistics parks, container trains and warehousing facilities, integrating port operations with hinterland connectivity.

Significance

APSEZ plays a major role in India's external trade, handling a substantial share of national cargo throughput, particularly in container and bulk segments. The Mundra–Vizhinjam network has positioned the company in the transhipment market traditionally dominated by ports such as Colombo, Singapore and Jebel Ali. As an integrated ports-to-logistics operator, the company is often cited in policy discussions on private participation in Indian port infrastructure under models such as build–operate–transfer concessions.
