Overview

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is an Indian actress and former model who works primarily in Hindi and Tamil cinema, with additional work in Bengali, English and Telugu films. She rose to international prominence after winning the Miss World pageant in 1994 and went on to become one of the most recognised Indian film personalities of her generation. She is a recipient of the Padma Shri, awarded by the Government of India in 2009, and has received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the Government of France.

Background

Aishwarya Rai was born on 1 November 1973 in Mangalore, Karnataka, into a Tulu-speaking Bunt family. Her father, Krishnaraj Rai, was a marine biologist with the Indian Army, and her mother, Vrinda Rai, was a homemaker and writer. She has an elder brother, Aditya Rai. The family moved to Mumbai, where she attended Arya Vidya Mandir and later studied at Jai Hind College and D. G. Ruparel College. She initially planned to study architecture before her modelling career took off.

Modelling and pageants

Rai began modelling while still in college, gaining wide recognition through a 1993 television commercial for Pepsi alongside Aamir Khan and Mahima Chaudhry. In 1994 she finished as first runner-up in the Femina Miss India contest, after which she was selected to represent India at the Miss World pageant held at Sun City, South Africa, on 19 November 1994, which she won.

Film career

Debut and early work (1997–1999)

Rai made her acting debut in Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Iruvar (1997), in which she played a dual role. Her Hindi debut came the same year with Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya. She received critical acclaim and her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn. The same year she appeared in the Tamil film Jeans by S. Shankar, which was India's official entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

Establishment as a leading actress (2000–2005)

Through the early 2000s she appeared in films including Mohabbatein (2000) directed by Aditya Chopra, Devdas (2002) by Sanjay Leela Bhansali in which she played Paro opposite Shah Rukh Khan, and Rituparno Ghosh's Bengali film Chokher Bali (2003). Devdas was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and earned her a second Filmfare Best Actress award. She also worked in international productions, including the British film Bride and Prejudice (2004) directed by Gurinder Chadha and the English-language Provoked (2006).

Later work (2006 onwards)

She starred in Dhoom 2 (2006), Guru (2007), Jodhaa Akbar (2008) by Ashutosh Gowariker, and Enthiran (2010), the Tamil science-fiction film directed by S. Shankar with Rajinikanth. Other notable appearances include Raavan and its Tamil counterpart Raavanan (2010), the Hollywood film The Pink Panther 2 (2009), and Mani Ratnam's Guru. After a hiatus following the birth of her daughter, she returned with Jazbaa (2015), Sarbjit (2016) and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). She later appeared in Mani Ratnam's two-part epic Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023), based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's Tamil novel.

Personal life

Aishwarya Rai married actor Abhishek Bachchan, son of Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, on 20 April 2007 in Mumbai. The couple's daughter, Aaradhya, was born on 16 November 2011. She has been a regular member of the Indian delegation at the Cannes Film Festival, serving as a jury member in 2003.

Public engagement and honours

Rai is associated with several philanthropic and goodwill activities. She has been a Goodwill Ambassador of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and has supported Smile Train, an organisation working on cleft lip and palate surgery for children. She runs the Aishwarya Rai Foundation in memory of her father. In 2009 she was conferred the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian honour, and in 2012 she received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the Government of France.
