Ambarnath is a suburban city and municipal council in the Thane district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. Located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Ambarnath lies to the east of Ulhasnagar and forms part of the broader urban agglomeration extending along the Central Railway corridor of Mumbai. The city is best known for the historic Ambreshwar Shiva Temple, an 11th-century stone temple that gives the town its name.

The name Ambarnath is derived from Ambreshwar, a name of the Hindu deity Shiva, in whose honour the ancient temple at the site was constructed. Local usage often shortens the temple name to "Ambarnath," and the surrounding settlement came to share this designation.
Ambarnath is situated in the eastern part of the Thane district, on the outskirts of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Waldhuni river, a tributary that flows through the Ulhas river basin, passes near the town. The Ambreshwar Temple, popularly called the Ambarnath Temple, is the city's most prominent heritage monument. Built in the Hemadpanti style of stone construction and dated by an inscription to the 11th century during the rule of the Shilahara dynasty, it is dedicated to Shiva. The temple is constructed on a stellate plan with intricately carved exterior walls depicting deities and motifs typical of medieval temple architecture in the Deccan. It is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India and remains an active site of worship, particularly during Mahashivratri.
Ambarnath is a multilingual, multi-ethnic settlement.
