Bharathi entered films in the early 1960s, a period when Tamil cinema was dominated by studio-based production and the star system built around M. G. Ramachandran (MGR) and Sivaji Ganesan. She was cast both in mythological and social subjects, and her career developed alongside contemporaries such as Saroja Devi, Devika, Jayalalithaa and K. R. Vijaya.
Bharathi began appearing in supporting and second-lead roles before being promoted to heroine status. Her early roles established her as a performer suited to soft, traditional female characters typical of mainstream Tamil scripts of the period.
Through the mid- to late-1960s she featured as the female lead in several films opposite MGR and Sivaji Ganesan, two of the most prominent figures in Tamil cinema.
