Bharti Singh is an Indian stand-up comedian, actress and television presenter from Amritsar, Punjab. She is widely recognised for her work in Hindi-language comedy programmes on Indian television, including The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, Comedy Circus, Comedy Nights Bachao, The Kapil Sharma Show and Khatra Khatra Khatra. Her self-deprecating humour, signature character "Lalli" and trademark laugh have made her one of the most familiar female comic performers on Indian television.

Background

Bharti Singh was born and brought up in Amritsar, Punjab, in a Punjabi family. She lost her father at a young age and was raised by her mother along with her elder siblings. She studied in Amritsar and trained briefly in shooting at the sports level before turning to performance. She has spoken in interviews about a financially difficult childhood, which later became material for her stage acts.

Career

Early breakthrough

Singh entered television through The Great Indian Laughter Challenge – Season 4 on Star One in 2008, where she finished as a finalist and became the first prominent female contestant to reach the final stages of the competition. The exposure led to regular work on the Indian stand-up circuit.

Comedy Circus and television comedy

From 2009 onwards she became a regular on Sony Entertainment Television's Comedy Circus franchise, appearing across multiple seasons including Comedy Circus Ka Naya Daur, Comedy Circus Ke Mahabali and Kahani Comedy Circus Ki. She frequently won seasons in pairing rounds and developed the "Lalli" character — a loud, rustic young woman — which became her best-known stage persona.
