Bhilwara lies on the Deccan-edge plateau of southern Rajasthan, within the historical Mewar region. The terrain consists of undulating plains interspersed with low hills of the Aravalli range. The Banas river and its tributaries, including the Kothari and the Menali, drain parts of the district. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers, a short monsoon season, and cool winters.
The area around Bhilwara has long been part of the Mewar region historically associated with the Sisodia rulers of Udaipur and Chittorgarh. The district contains several sites linked to the medieval and early-modern history of Mewar, including temples, stepwells and forts. Bhilwara town itself developed as a market and trading centre, and grew significantly after Indian independence with the establishment of textile mills and processing units.
From the second half of the twentieth century, Bhilwara emerged as one of India's leading centres for the production of suiting and shirting fabrics, polyester-viscose blends, and yarn. A cluster of spinning, weaving, processing and garment units developed in and around the city, supported by ancillary industries. Several large Indian textile groups maintain manufacturing operations in the district.
Bhilwara district is also known for mineral resources, including deposits of zinc, lead, mica and building stone. Mining and mineral processing form an important component of the local economy alongside textiles and agriculture.
The city is administered by a municipal council under the Rajasthan Municipalities Act, while the district is headed by a District Collector. Bhilwara is also a constituency for the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly and falls within the Bhilwara Lok Sabha constituency.
The district is dotted with religious and heritage sites of regional importance, including the Harni Mahadev temple, the Mandalgarh fort, and the temple complex at Menal known for its medieval architecture. Bhilwara town itself hosts traditional fairs and festivals associated with the Mewar calendar, and local cuisine reflects broader Rajasthani culinary traditions.
The economy of Bhilwara rests on three principal pillars:
Bhilwara has a network of government and private schools, technical institutes and colleges affiliated with universities in Rajasthan. The city hosts engineering, management, polytechnic and medical education institutions catering to students from across the region.
