Background

The company was founded in December 2013 as Grofers by Albinder Dhindsa and Saurabh Kumar. Both founders had previously worked together at Cabify in India. Grofers initially functioned as a hyperlocal delivery network connecting customers with neighbourhood retailers, before transitioning to an inventory-led grocery model in subsequent years.

In December 2021, Grofers rebranded itself as Blinkit, reflecting its strategic pivot to a quick-commerce model focused on delivering orders within approximately ten minutes through a network of small fulfilment centres known as "dark stores".

History

  • 2013: Founded as Grofers in Gurugram by Albinder Dhindsa and Saurabh Kumar.
  • 2014–2015: Raised early-stage funding from investors including Sequoia Capital and Tiger Global, expanding operations to multiple Indian cities.
  • 2018: Shifted focus toward private-label products and an inventory-led approach.
  • 2021: Zomato made a significant minority investment in Grofers. The company rebranded as Blinkit in December and announced a transition to ten-minute delivery.
  • 2022: Zomato acquired Blinkit in an all-stock transaction, integrating it as a wholly owned subsidiary.
  • 2023 onwards: Blinkit expanded its dark-store footprint across major Indian metros and tier-1 cities, broadening its catalogue beyond groceries to include electronics, stationery, personal care, and emergency items.

Operations

Blinkit operates through a network of dark stores located in dense urban catchments, each serving a small geographic radius to enable rapid delivery. Orders are placed through the Blinkit mobile application and website, with delivery typically promised within ten to twenty minutes. The company sources products from manufacturers, distributors, and private-label partners, and its fleet of delivery riders fulfils orders from the nearest dark store.

Significance

Blinkit is widely credited with popularising the quick-commerce model in India. Its rebranding and ten-minute delivery proposition contributed to a broader shift in consumer expectations around grocery and convenience purchases in Indian cities. Following its acquisition by Zomato, the business became an important component of the parent group's diversification beyond food delivery, and quick commerce has emerged as a strategically significant vertical within the group's reporting.
