Shetty began partnering Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, a player from Andhra Pradesh, in the mid-2010s. The combination of Shetty's height and net play with Rankireddy's power from the back court has been a defining feature of their game. The pair has trained for extended periods at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad and has been guided by former Danish doubles player Mathias Boe.
In 2023, Shetty and Rankireddy reached the world No. 1 ranking in men's doubles in the BWF rankings, becoming the first Indian pair to top the doubles list.
Shetty represented India in men's doubles at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021) and at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. At Paris 2024, he and Rankireddy were among India's medal hopes and reached the quarterfinal stage.
Chirag Shetty's career marks a turning point for Indian men's doubles badminton, a discipline historically dominated by countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Korea, and Denmark. Together with Rankireddy, he has helped India win firsts at the Asian Games, the Asia Championships, the World Championships, the Commonwealth Games (in doubles), and the Super 1000 level on the BWF World Tour. The partnership is also credited with strengthening India's depth in team competitions such as the Thomas Cup.
