Erode district lies in the interior of the Kongu region. It is bordered by Karnataka to the north, and by the Tamil Nadu districts of Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Karur, Namakkal, and the Nilgiris, with administrative boundaries having been adjusted following the carving out of Tiruppur district in 2009 and the more recent constitution of Chennimalai-area taluks. The terrain consists largely of plains drained by the Kaveri and its tributaries, with hills along the western and northern fringes, including parts of the Sathyamangalam range. The Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, declared a tiger reserve in 2013, occupies a substantial forested area in the north of the district and forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
The district is administered by a District Collector and is divided into revenue divisions, taluks, and revenue villages. For local self-government, it contains the Erode City Municipal Corporation, several municipalities and town panchayats, along with panchayat unions and village panchayats. Bhavani, Gobichettipalayam, Sathyamangalam, Anthiyur, Perundurai, Kodumudi, and Chennimalai are among the prominent towns. Policing is organised under the Erode police district within the Tamil Nadu Police.
The territory of present-day Erode formed part of the historic Kongu Nadu and came successively under the Cheras, the medieval Cholas, the Hoysalas, the Vijayanagara Empire, and later the Mysore kingdom. After the Anglo-Mysore Wars in the late 18th century, the area was incorporated into the Coimbatore district of the Madras Presidency under the British. Erode district was constituted as a separate district on 31 August 1979, carved out of the erstwhile Coimbatore district. In 2009, the western portion was separated to form Tiruppur district, redrawing Erode's boundaries.
Erode is a recognised centre for textiles, particularly handloom and powerloom weaving in clusters such as Chennimalai, Bhavani, and Komarapalayam, and is well known for Bhavani jamakkalam (carpets), which holds a Geographical Indication tag. The town of Erode hosts one of South India's largest turmeric markets, and the surrounding tracts produce turmeric, sugarcane, paddy, coconut, banana, and oilseeds, supported by Kaveri-fed irrigation and the Lower Bhavani Project. Engineering, foundry, and transformer manufacturing are concentrated in Perundurai and Gobichettipalayam, and SIPCOT operates an industrial complex at Perundurai.
The district is served by National Highway 44 (the Salem–Kochi axis passing through Perundurai and Erode) and other national and state highways linking it to Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, and Karnataka. Erode Junction is a major railway hub on the Southern Railway's Chennai–Coimbatore main line and houses an electric loco shed. The nearest airport is Coimbatore International Airport.
Tamil is the principal language. Hinduism is the majority religion, with notable Muslim and Christian minorities. Pilgrimage and temple sites in the district include the Sangameswarar temple at Bhavani (at the confluence of the Kaveri and Bhavani rivers), the Kongu Kailasam at Thindal, and the Arulmigu Magudeswarar temple at Kodumudi. The district has been associated with several public figures of Tamil Nadu, most prominently the social reformer E. V. Ramasamy "Periyar", who was born in Erode in 1879.
Educational institutions in the district include the Government Erode Medical College, Bharathiar University constituent colleges, Kongu Engineering College at Perundurai, Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, and a network of arts, science, and polytechnic colleges. School education is administered through the Tamil Nadu Department of School Education.
