The project was officially announced in 2021, more than two decades after the original. Principal photography began in 2022, with shooting carried out at locations including Lucknow, Palampur and parts of Himachal Pradesh that doubled for the rural Punjab and Pakistan settings depicted in the film. Anil Sharma directed the sequel, retaining many of the period production design elements of the original. Mithoon and Monty Sharma composed new music, while the iconic theme by Uttam Singh from the 2001 film was reused, including a recreated version of the song "Udd Ja Kale Kawan."

Release

Gadar 2 was released theatrically on 11 August 2023, clashing with Sunny Deol's contemporaries Akshay Kumar's OMG 2 on the same day, ahead of the Independence Day weekend. The film opened on a wide release across India and select overseas markets. It was later made available on streaming via ZEE5.

Reception

Box office

The film became one of the biggest box office successes of 2023 in Indian cinema, drawing strong footfalls in single-screen theatres and tier-2 and tier-3 markets, in addition to multiplexes. It is among the highest-grossing Hindi films ever released in India, and revived theatrical interest for legacy franchises in Bollywood.

Critical response

Critical reception was mixed. Reviewers praised Sunny Deol's screen presence, the nostalgia-driven action set pieces and Anil Sharma's old-school direction, while some criticised the screenplay, length and depiction of geopolitical themes. The performance of Utkarsh Sharma in an expanded role drew particular attention.

Significance

Gadar 2's commercial performance marked a notable revival for Sunny Deol's career and demonstrated the continuing audience appetite in India for patriotic and family-oriented dramas rooted in the Partition and post-Partition era. Its success, alongside other 2023 hits, was widely cited as part of a broader recovery of the Hindi film industry's theatrical business after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack album combines newly composed songs with reworked versions of tracks from the original film. Notable songs include "Udd Ja Kale Kawan" (recreated), "Main Nikla Gaddi Leke" (reprise) and new compositions performed by playback singers including Mithoon and others.
