The film draws from the life of Ganga Harjivandas, born in Kathiawar, Gujarat, who, according to S. Hussain Zaidi's account, was trafficked into Kamathipura in her youth and eventually became a brothel owner and an influential figure advocating for the welfare of sex workers and orphan children. Zaidi's Mafia Queens of Mumbai, co-authored with Jane Borges and published in 2011, devotes a chapter to her life, which formed the narrative basis of the film.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali had reportedly developed the project for several years, with casting changes during pre-production. Alia Bhatt was finalised in the title role, marking her first collaboration with the director.
The film follows the journey of a young woman from Kathiawad who is brought to Mumbai under the false pretence of marriage and sold to a brothel in Kamathipura. Renaming herself Gangubai, she navigates the hierarchy of the red-light district, gains the protection of underworld figure Rahim Lala (played by Ajay Devgn), and becomes the matriarch of Kamathipura. The narrative depicts her rise as a community leader, her advocacy for the rights and dignity of sex workers, and her efforts to secure recognition for them.
Principal photography began in late 2020 after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and was carried out largely on elaborate sets recreating 1950s–60s Kamathipura at Film City, Mumbai. The film's production design, helmed by Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray, recreated period streetscapes, brothels and the visual texture of mid-century Bombay. Costumes were designed by Sheetal Sharma, with Alia Bhatt's white sari and bindi look becoming a recognisable visual motif.
The soundtrack was composed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with lyrics by A. M. Turaz and Kumaar. Notable songs include "Dholida", "Meri Jaan" and the qawwali "Shikayat". The background score was also composed by Bhansali.
Gangubai Kathiawadi premiered in the Berlinale Special section at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival in February 2022. It was released theatrically in India on 25 February 2022 and later began streaming on Netflix.
The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with particular praise directed at Alia Bhatt's central performance, Bhansali's direction, the production design and the cinematography of Sudeep Chatterjee. It performed strongly at the Indian box office and emerged as one of the higher-grossing Hindi films of 2022.
The film received recognition at multiple Indian award ceremonies. At the 69th National Film Awards, it won the Best Feature Film in Hindi, and Alia Bhatt shared the Best Actress award. It also won several Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Director for Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Best Actress for Alia Bhatt.
Gangubai Kathiawadi brought renewed mainstream attention to the history of Kamathipura and to discussions about the rights and social status of sex workers in India. It is also notable as a major commercial Hindi film centred on a female protagonist drawn from a marginalised community, and as a landmark in Alia Bhatt's filmography.
Some descendants and associates of the real-life figure approached the Bombay High Court raising objections to the film's portrayal and to the use of the name and likeness. The matter was heard in court, and the film proceeded to release. Residents and groups associated with Kamathipura also raised concerns regarding the depiction of the locality.
