Grasim was incorporated in 1947 as a textiles trading and manufacturing concern. The name "Grasim" derives from "Gwalior Rayon and Silk Mills", reflecting its early focus on rayon-based textiles. Over the decades, the company expanded into related upstream and downstream segments, including cellulosic fibres, pulp, chemicals (notably caustic soda), and building materials.
Grasim is among the world's larger producers of viscose staple fibre, a man-made cellulosic fibre used widely in apparel and home textiles. The company also produces viscose filament yarn.
