The creation of GADVASU was intended to provide focused academic and research attention to livestock, poultry, dairy and fisheries sectors, which form an important component of Punjab's rural economy. The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes through its constituent colleges. Its principal academic units include:
Programmes are offered in disciplines such as veterinary medicine and surgery, animal nutrition, animal genetics and breeding, livestock production and management, dairy technology, fisheries resource management, and animal biotechnology.
Research at GADVASU spans animal health, disease diagnosis, reproductive biotechnology, livestock breeding, dairy product development, fish farming and feed technology. The university operates teaching veterinary hospitals and diagnostic laboratories, and runs extension activities including farmer training programmes, livestock fairs (pashu palan melas) and advisory services for dairy and poultry farmers across Punjab.
GADVASU is one of the few standalone veterinary and animal sciences universities in India, and serves as the primary institution for veterinary education and livestock research in Punjab. Its work supports the state's substantial dairy sector and contributes to the development of allied agricultural activities such as poultry farming, piggery and aquaculture.
