The district was carved out of the erstwhile Kanpur district as part of an administrative reorganisation intended to bring governance closer to rural populations. The parent district was bifurcated into Kanpur Nagar, covering the urban metropolis of Kanpur, and Kanpur Dehat, comprising predominantly rural tehsils. The name Dehat, meaning "rural" in Hindi, reflects the agrarian character of the district.
For a brief period the district was renamed Ramabai Nagar, after the social reformer Ramabai Ambedkar, before the original name Kanpur Dehat was restored.
Kanpur Dehat lies in the Ganga–Yamuna doab. The river Yamuna forms part of its southern boundary, while the Ganga flows to the north. The terrain is largely alluvial plain, supporting intensive cultivation. The district is bordered by Kanpur Nagar to the east, Auraiya and Etawah to the west, Kannauj and Farrukhabad to the north, and Hamirpur and Jalaun across the Yamuna to the south.
The district is divided into tehsils including Akbarpur, Bhognipur, Derapur, Rasulabad, and Sikandra. Major towns and blocks include Akbarpur, Pukhrayan, Rasulabad, Jhinjhak, Rura, and Sikandra. Local administration is carried out through the office of the District Magistrate based at the collectorate complex in Mati.
The economy is predominantly agricultural. Principal crops include wheat, paddy, pulses, potato, and oilseeds. Small-scale industries, dairying, and handloom activity supplement farm incomes. The district benefits from its proximity to the industrial city of Kanpur and from connectivity along the Kanpur–Jhansi rail and road corridors.
Kanpur Dehat is served by the Kanpur–Jhansi line of the North Central Railway, with stations at Rura, Jhinjhak, and Pukhrayan among others. National and state highways connect the district headquarters to Kanpur, Kannauj, Hamirpur, and Etawah. The nearest airport is at Kanpur, with wider connectivity through Lucknow.
Hindi is the predominant language, with Awadhi and Bundeli influences in everyday speech owing to the district's location at the cultural transition between the Awadh and Bundelkhand regions. Hinduism is the majority religion, with significant Muslim and other communities present in towns and rural settlements.
