Lyca Productions was established as a subsidiary of the Lyca Group, a multinational business group whose interests include telecommunications (notably the Lycamobile brand), money transfer services, and media. The production house was set up to expand the group's presence in Indian entertainment, with a particular focus on large-scale Tamil-language films and their distribution across domestic and overseas markets.
The company produces feature films and also functions as a distributor, handling international releases of Tamil films in markets where the wider Lyca Group has a commercial footprint, including the United Kingdom, parts of Europe, North America and the Gulf region. Beyond Tamil productions, Lyca has been credited as a co-producer or distributor on selected Hindi and other Indian-language projects.
Lyca Productions is best known for backing high-budget Tamil films directed by S. Shankar, including the science-fiction films 2.0 (2018) and Indian 2 (2024), both featuring leading Indian stars. The company has also been associated with films featuring actors such as Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Vijay, among others, across a range of commercial and mid-budget projects.
Within the Tamil film industry, Lyca Productions is regarded as one of the major studios capable of mounting big-budget productions with extensive visual effects and pan-Indian theatrical releases. Its links with the international Lyca Group give it an established route for marketing and distributing Indian films in the South Asian diaspora.
