The university was founded by an Act of the Haryana Legislative Assembly in 1976, originally under the name Rohtak University. The institution was set up to expand access to higher education in Haryana and to act as an affiliating and teaching university for the region surrounding Rohtak. It was subsequently renamed in honour of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, reflecting the social and educational ideals associated with the Arya Samaj movement, which has had a long-standing presence in the region.
The main campus is situated in Rohtak, a city in southern Haryana that lies within the National Capital Region (NCR). Rohtak is connected by road and rail to Delhi and other parts of north India, which has helped the university draw students from across Haryana and neighbouring states. The campus houses academic departments, administrative offices, hostels, libraries, and sports facilities.
MDU functions as both a teaching and an affiliating university. It conducts undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, and diploma programmes through its on-campus departments and through a large network of affiliated colleges spread across Haryana. Major faculties typically include:
The university also conducts entrance examinations for admission to several professional and postgraduate programmes, and it administers semester examinations for its affiliated colleges.
As one of the principal state universities of Haryana, MDU plays a central role in undergraduate and postgraduate education across the state through its affiliated colleges. It contributes to research output in the social sciences, sciences, and professional disciplines, and serves as an examination authority for a large student population. Its location within the NCR gives it relevance both in regional development and in linkages with institutions in Delhi and adjoining areas.
