The university traces its origin to the Gujarat Forensic Sciences University (GFSU), which was established by the Government of Gujarat in 2009 as the world's first university dedicated to forensic sciences. With the rising importance of forensic evidence and scientific investigation in the Indian criminal justice system, the Government of India sought to scale this model nationally.
Through the National Forensic Sciences University Act, 2020, GFSU was upgraded and merged with the Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Science (LNJN NICFS), New Delhi, to form a single central university with a pan-India mandate.
NFSU offers diploma, undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral and certificate programmes spanning a wide range of disciplines. Its academic schools and centres typically cover areas such as:
The university also conducts short-term training programmes for police officers, judicial officers, prosecutors, defence personnel and forensic practitioners from India and abroad.
The main campus of NFSU is located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Following its conversion into a national university, additional campuses have been established across several Indian states, and the institution has signed cooperation arrangements with foreign governments to set up offshore campuses and training facilities.
Apart from academic instruction, NFSU undertakes applied research in areas such as digital evidence, narcotics, DNA profiling, cybercrime investigation, forensic accounting and forensic linguistics. The university supports law enforcement agencies through casework consultation, capacity building and the development of standard operating procedures.
NFSU is positioned as a central pillar of India's effort to modernise criminal investigation by promoting scientific evidence, reducing reliance on confessional or testimonial evidence, and strengthening conviction quality. Its creation aligns with broader reforms in Indian criminal law, including provisions in newer criminal codes that emphasise forensic examination of serious offences. The university also contributes to international cooperation in forensic capacity building, particularly with countries in Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia.
