Overview

Nawada lies in the south-central portion of Bihar and shares its boundaries with several neighbouring districts of the state and with the state of Jharkhand to the south. The district is bordered by Gaya district to the west, Sheikhpura district and Nalanda district to the north, and Jamui district to the east. The southern fringe of the district touches the hilly terrain that extends into the Chota Nagpur region.

Geography

The district presents a transitional landscape between the alluvial Gangetic plain to the north and the older, hillier terrain to the south. Smaller hills and forested tracts occur in the southern portions, while the northern and central parts are more fertile and intensively cultivated. The Sakri and Khuri rivers, among others, traverse the district and support agriculture.

Administration

Nawada district is administered by a District Magistrate and is divided into sub-divisions and community development blocks for revenue and development administration. For law and order it is under the supervision of a Superintendent of Police. The district sends representatives to the Bihar Legislative Assembly from constituencies that lie within its boundaries, and is part of the Nawada Lok Sabha constituency for elections to the lower house of the Indian Parliament.

Economy

The economy of Nawada is predominantly agrarian. Paddy, wheat, pulses and oilseeds are among the major crops, with cultivation supported by canals, tanks and tubewell irrigation. Allied activities include animal husbandry, while small-scale industry, trade and services are concentrated in the headquarters town and along major road corridors.

Transport

The district is connected by road to Gaya, Patna and other parts of Bihar, and lies on rail routes operated by the Indian Railways linking it with major cities of the state. State highways and rural roads provide connectivity between the headquarters and the block-level towns.

Demographics and culture

Hindi is the principal language of administration and education in Nawada, with Magahi widely spoken in everyday life. The district shares the cultural traditions of the broader Magadh region, including its festivals, folk music and cuisine. Religious sites, fairs and seasonal observances draw participation from across the rural and urban population.
