Background

ONGC traces its origins to the early years of post-independence India, when the country sought to build indigenous capability in the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. The Oil and Natural Gas Commission was established in 1956 as a statutory body under an Act of Parliament. In 1993, the Commission was converted into a public limited company under the Companies Act, becoming the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited.

The corporation has played a central role in developing major oil and gas fields in India, including the offshore Mumbai High field in the Arabian Sea, which has been one of the country's most significant sources of crude oil since its discovery in the 1970s.

ONGC is engaged across the upstream segment of the oil and gas value chain, including exploration, drilling, development, and production of crude oil and natural gas. It operates fields both onshore (in basins such as Assam, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh) and offshore (on the western and eastern continental shelves).
