Background

Kalki Krishnamurthy's Ponniyin Selvan is widely regarded as one of the most influential works in modern Tamil literature. The novel, originally serialised in the Tamil weekly Kalki between 1950 and 1954, runs across five volumes and dramatises the early life of Arulmozhivarman, who later ascended the Chola throne as Rajaraja I. Attempts to adapt the work to film had been considered for decades; Mani Ratnam himself had explored the project at earlier points in his career before the production became feasible as a large-scale, two-part feature.

Plot premise

Set in the latter half of the 10th century during the reign of the Chola emperor Sundara Chola, the film follows the young prince Arulmozhivarman and his elder brother Aditha Karikalan as the empire faces conspiracies from feudatories, rival factions, and the Pandya remnants. Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, a young Vaanar chieftain, serves as the principal point-of-view character, carrying messages between members of the royal family and uncovering plots against the throne. The narrative also features Nandini, the queen of the Pazhuvettarayars, whose past with Aditha Karikalan drives much of the political intrigue.

Production

Production designer Thotta Tharani led the creation of the Thanjavur palace and ceremonial sets, while costume design was handled by Eka Lakhani. Visual effects work was supervised by multiple studios, with portions of the action and large crowd sequences enhanced digitally. Principal photography took place in stages between 2019 and 2021, with delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Music

The soundtrack was composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics primarily by Ilango Krishnan. The album includes tracks such as "Ponni Nadhi", "Chola Chola", "Ratchasa Maamaney", "Devaralan Aattam" and "Alaikadal", incorporating Carnatic and folk influences along with elements drawn from temple percussion traditions. The audio was released by Tips Music ahead of the film's theatrical premiere.

Release and reception

The film opened on 30 September 2022 across more than 8,000 screens worldwide, including IMAX presentations. It received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the production design, ensemble performances, music and Mani Ratnam's compression of a sprawling source novel into a coherent first part. The film performed strongly at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of 2022 and ranking among the top-grossing Indian films of the year.

Awards

At the 70th National Film Awards, Ponniyin Selvan: I won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography (Ravi Varman), Best Music Direction – Background Score (A. R. Rahman), and Best Costume Design (Eka Lakhani). The film also received recognition at the Filmfare Awards South and other regional ceremonies, with nominations for direction, performances and technical categories.

Significance

The film is regarded as a landmark in modern Tamil cinema for bringing a long-anticipated literary adaptation to a mainstream pan-Indian audience. It contributed to renewed public interest in Chola history, Kalki's novel, and heritage sites associated with the dynasty such as the Brihadeeswarar Temple at Thanjavur and the port town of Nagapattinam. Together with its sequel, the project is among the largest historical productions undertaken in the Tamil film industry.

Sequel

Ponniyin Selvan: II, the concluding part of the adaptation, was released on 28 April 2023, completing the screen narrative drawn from the novel.
