Ravenshaw College was founded in the second half of the nineteenth century as a centre for higher education serving the Odisha region, then part of the Bengal Presidency. The college played an important role in the spread of modern education across Odisha and was associated with the broader social and political movements that emerged in the region during the late colonial era. For much of its history, it was affiliated with successive state universities and offered undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in arts, science, and commerce.
In 2006, the Government of Odisha conferred unitary university status on the institution, restructuring Ravenshaw College as Ravenshaw University. The conversion was intended to expand academic offerings, introduce semester-based curricula, and strengthen research activity at the institution. As a unitary university, Ravenshaw operates from its historic campus in Cuttack without affiliated colleges.
The university offers programmes across the faculties of arts, science, commerce and management, organised into multiple academic departments. It runs undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, and supports research centres in select disciplines. Admission to most programmes is based on entrance examinations and merit.
The main campus is situated in Cuttack, the former capital of Odisha. The campus is known for its colonial-era architecture, including heritage buildings that date from the institution's earlier years as a college.
Ravenshaw is regarded as a heritage institution of Odisha and has produced a number of notable alumni in literature, public administration, politics, science, and the arts. Several leaders associated with Odia language, culture, and the freedom movement studied or taught at the institution, giving it a prominent place in the cultural history of the state.
