The Robot franchise (also stylised as Enthiran in Tamil) is an Indian Tamil-language science fiction film series created and directed by S. Shankar. The franchise centres on the relationship between Dr. Vaseegaran, a roboticist, and Chitti, a humanoid android he constructs. Both films in the series star Rajinikanth in dual roles as the scientist and the robot, and are noted for their large production budgets, extensive use of visual effects, and pan-Indian theatrical releases.

The concept for the franchise was developed by S. Shankar over several years, drawing on themes of artificial intelligence, the ethics of creating sentient machines, and the conflict between scientific ambition and human emotion. An earlier version of the project was announced in the 1990s with different lead actors before eventually being mounted as a Rajinikanth vehicle. The films combine the conventions of mainstream Tamil cinema — songs, romance and star-driven spectacle — with science fiction motifs derived from international cinema and literature.
Enthiran, released in Hindi as Robot and in Telugu as Robo, was released on 1 October 2010. The film stars Rajinikanth as Dr. Vaseegaran and as Chitti, with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan playing Sana, Vaseegaran's fiancée. The supporting cast includes Danny Denzongpa as the antagonist Dr. Bohra. The screenplay traces Chitti's evolution from a benign helper robot into a self-aware machine that turns against its creator after acquiring human emotions.
The film featured visual effects supervised by Srinivas Mohan and animatronics work by Stan Winston Studio. Music was composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography by R. Rathnavelu. Enthiran was, at the time of its release, among the most expensive Indian films ever produced and became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 2010.
2.0, released on 29 November 2018, is a standalone sequel to Enthiran. Directed again by S. Shankar and produced by Subaskaran Allirajah of Lyca Productions, the film stars Rajinikanth reprising his roles, with Akshay Kumar as the antagonist Pakshi Rajan and Amy Jackson as the android Nila. The narrative addresses the environmental and biological consequences of mobile phone radiation on bird populations, framing this as the motivation for the antagonist's vendetta.
2.0 was shot natively in 3D and was extensively dubbed into Hindi, Telugu and other languages. It was widely reported to be the most expensive Indian film produced up to its release. The visual effects were again handled by Srinivas Mohan, with music by A. R. Rahman and cinematography by Nirav Shah.
The franchise consistently explores questions associated with the science fiction genre in an Indian commercial cinema context:
The Robot franchise is regarded as a landmark in Indian science fiction cinema and in the technical evolution of the Tamil film industry. Enthiran is frequently cited as a benchmark for visual effects-driven storytelling in Indian films and helped establish the viability of large-budget, technology-heavy productions outside Hindi cinema. 2.0 further extended the scale of Indian VFX production and was among the earliest Indian films released widely in stereoscopic 3D. Both films achieved substantial box office success in India and in overseas markets, particularly in territories with a significant Tamil diaspora.
The character of Chitti has entered popular culture as one of the most recognisable original characters in 21st-century Indian cinema, and the franchise has influenced subsequent science fiction projects in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi cinema.
