The Sairam group of educational institutions was established by Sri Sai Leo Muthu, who founded the Sapthagiri Educational Trust to operate schools, colleges and technical institutions in Tamil Nadu. The group's flagship campus is situated on the outskirts of Chennai, along the Chennai–Trichy national highway near Tambaram, and houses several institutions including the engineering college.
Sri Sairam Engineering College was set up to provide technical education at the undergraduate level, and it subsequently expanded into postgraduate engineering and management programmes. The college received autonomous status from the University Grants Commission, allowing it to design its own curriculum within the framework set by Anna University.
The college conducts Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes across core and emerging disciplines. Departments typically include:
Postgraduate offerings include Master of Engineering (M.E.) programmes in select specialisations and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. The institution also supports research scholars in disciplines recognised as research centres by Anna University.
The campus is located in the Sai Leo Nagar area of West Tambaram and forms part of the larger Sairam educational complex, which also hosts the polytechnic college, arts and science college, medical college and other institutions of the group. Facilities include departmental laboratories, a central library, hostels, sports grounds and an auditorium used for cultural and technical events.
Students participate in technical symposia, hackathons and inter-collegiate cultural festivals. The college maintains placement and training cells that coordinate campus recruitment with information technology, manufacturing and core engineering employers. It also operates innovation and incubation initiatives to encourage student entrepreneurship and product development.
As one of the larger self-financing engineering colleges in the Chennai region, Sri Sairam Engineering College contributes to the technical education ecosystem of Tamil Nadu, drawing students from across the state and from neighbouring regions. Its location along a major transport corridor and its position within a multi-institution campus make it a recognisable name in the Tambaram area.
