Tripura University was originally established as a state university to consolidate higher education in Tripura, which had earlier been served largely through colleges affiliated to the University of Calcutta and other institutions. With growing demand for advanced teaching and research within the state, the university was developed as the apex affiliating and teaching institution for Tripura.
It was subsequently converted into a central university by an Act of the Parliament of India, bringing it under the direct ambit of the Government of India and expanding its mandate, funding base, and academic scope. As a central university, it functions under the regulatory framework of the University Grants Commission.
The main campus is situated at Suryamaninagar, a short distance from the state capital, Agartala. The university is organised into multiple faculties and schools that house departments in disciplines such as Bengali, English, Hindi, Kokborok and other tribal languages, history, political science, economics, sociology, education, physics, chemistry, mathematics, botany, zoology, microbiology, computer science, commerce, management, and law.
In addition to teaching departments on the main campus, a number of colleges across Tripura are affiliated to the university for undergraduate and certain postgraduate programmes.
Tripura University offers programmes leading to bachelor's, master's, MPhil, and PhD degrees, along with diploma and certificate courses. Research activity spans the natural sciences, social sciences, and the languages and cultures of the north-east, with particular emphasis on subjects of regional relevance such as tribal studies, Kokborok language and literature, biodiversity of the region, and the political and social history of Tripura and adjoining areas.
As the central university of Tripura, the institution plays a central role in shaping higher education, faculty training, and research output within the state. It contributes to the documentation and study of indigenous languages and cultures of Tripura, supports human resource development for the region, and serves students from across the north-east as well as from other parts of India and neighbouring countries.
