Viacom18 was established as a joint venture between Network18, an Indian media group, and Viacom Inc. of the United States. The venture was created to combine Viacom's international content and brand expertise with Network18's distribution footprint and understanding of the Indian market. Following Reliance Industries' acquisition of Network18, Viacom18 came under the broader Reliance media umbrella.
The company's flagship general entertainment channel, Colors, was launched as a Hindi-language broadcaster and became one of the leading channels in the Indian general entertainment category. Over time, Viacom18 expanded its bouquet to include regional language variants of Colors, the kids channel Nickelodeon (in partnership for Indian audiences), the youth channel MTV India, the English entertainment channel Comedy Central, and the music and lifestyle brand VH1.
Viacom18 operates a multi-genre, multi-language television network. Its general entertainment offering is led by Colors in Hindi, supported by regional Colors channels. The company also runs movie channels, youth and music channels such as MTV India and VH1, and the Sports18 channels.
Viacom18 Studios produces, co-produces and distributes feature films across Hindi and various Indian regional languages. It has been associated with a range of mainstream and content-driven theatrical releases.
The company's digital business has included the Voot streaming service and, following integration with Reliance's digital media assets, the JioCinema platform, which carries entertainment, news and live sports content.
Through Sports18 and JioCinema, Viacom18 holds rights to several major sports properties, including cricket tournaments and international leagues, making it a significant player in Indian sports media.
Viacom18 is one of the principal broadcasters and content producers in the Indian media industry. Its programming has shaped trends in Hindi general entertainment, reality television, youth content and Indian-language regional broadcasting. Its move into large-scale digital sports streaming has been viewed as a notable development in the shift of Indian audiences from traditional television to internet-based viewing.
