The company was set up by the Bhatt brothers as a family-run banner. Mahesh Bhatt, who had already established himself as a director with a string of acclaimed films in the 1980s, took on creative responsibilities including screenwriting and direction, while Mukesh Bhatt managed production and business operations. Over time, the next generation of the Bhatt family, including Mahesh Bhatt's daughter Pooja Bhatt and son Mohit Suri's cousin and director Mohit Suri, as well as filmmaker Vikram Bhatt, became closely associated with the banner's output.
Vishesh Films is known for working with relatively contained budgets and an emphasis on strong soundtracks, often releasing music that becomes commercially successful independent of the film. The banner has frequently revived and re-recorded older Hindi and international melodies for its productions and has been a steady employer of new music composers, lyricists and singers.
The company has also been associated with introducing new directors, many of whom began as assistants on its sets before being given an independent project under the banner.
The banner's filmography includes a number of commercially successful Hindi films, among them:
Vishesh Films is regarded as one of the long-running independent production houses in Hindi cinema. It has been credited with sustaining the mid-budget romantic drama and thriller as a viable theatrical category in India, and with providing early platforms to actors such as Emraan Hashmi, Kangana Ranaut, Imran Hashmi, and Shraddha Kapoor, as well as directors including Mohit Suri and Vikram Bhatt. Its film soundtracks, frequently chart-toppers on Indian music platforms, have contributed significantly to the popular Hindi film music landscape.
