Background

The Wockhardt group, established by Habil Khorakiwala, is primarily known for its pharmaceutical business, Wockhardt Limited. The hospital business was developed as a separate venture to extend the group's presence into clinical care delivery. Over the years, the hospital arm has been organised under entities including Wockhardt Hospitals Limited, with the chain positioning itself in the private super-speciality segment of Indian healthcare.

History

The hospitals business grew through the 1990s and 2000s with the establishment of multi-speciality facilities in Mumbai and other cities. In 2009, the group divested a significant portion of its hospital network to Fortis Healthcare, which acquired ten Wockhardt hospital units. Following the transaction, Wockhardt Hospitals continued operations with its remaining facilities and subsequently expanded again, adding hospitals in cities such as Mumbai (South Mumbai and Mira Road), Nashik, Nagpur and Rajkot.

Services

The chain offers tertiary and quaternary care across specialities including:

  • Cardiology and cardiac surgery
  • Orthopaedics and joint replacement
  • Neurology and neurosurgery
  • Minimal access and bariatric surgery
  • Oncology
  • Nephrology and urology
  • Critical care and emergency medicine

Significance

Wockhardt Hospitals is recognised as one of the early corporate hospital chains in India, contributing to the growth of organised private healthcare in the country. Its 2009 divestment to Fortis Healthcare was among the larger transactions in the Indian hospital sector and reshaped the competitive landscape of corporate healthcare in western and southern India.
