Yash was born on 8 January 1986 in Bhuvanahalli, a village in the Hassan district of Karnataka, and grew up in Mysuru. His father, Arun Kumar, worked with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), and his mother, Pushpalatha, was a homemaker. He completed his schooling in Mysuru and later moved to Bengaluru to pursue a career in acting.
Before entering films, he was associated with the theatre group Benaka, working under the dramatist Hulugappa Kattimani. He also appeared in Kannada television serials in the mid-2000s, including Nanda Gokula and Preethi Illada Mele, which gave him early visibility before his transition to cinema.
Yash made his film debut in 2007 with Jambada Hudugi, in which he played a supporting role. His first lead role came with Moggina Manasu (2008), directed by Shashank, for which he won the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor. He followed this with films such as Rocky (2008), Gokula (2009), Modalasala (2010), Kallara Santhe (2009) and Rajadhani (2011), gradually establishing himself as a leading man.
Commercial success followed with Drama (2012), directed by Yogaraj Bhat, and Googly (2013). His pairing with actress Radhika Pandit became popular through these films. Mr. and Mrs. Ramachari (2014), directed by Santhosh Ananddram, was a major box-office success and earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Kannada. He continued with Gajakesari (2014), Mr. Airavata (2015), Masterpiece (2017) and Santhu Straight Forward (2016), a string that consolidated his standing as a top star in Kannada cinema.
Yash starred as Rocky in K.G.F: Chapter 1 (2018), written and directed by Prashanth Neel and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under Hombale Films. The film, set against the Kolar Gold Fields, was released simultaneously in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam, and became one of the highest-grossing Kannada films of its time.
Its sequel, K.G.F: Chapter 2 (2022), featuring Sanjay Dutt, Raveena Tandon and Srinidhi Shetty, was an even larger commercial success across Indian languages and overseas markets, making it among the highest-grossing Indian films released up to that point. The two films are widely regarded as a turning point for Kannada cinema's national footprint.
Yash married Kannada actress Radhika Pandit, his frequent on-screen partner, on 9 December 2016 in Bengaluru. The couple have two children, a daughter and a son. He is involved in philanthropic work through the Yashomarga Foundation, which has undertaken projects related to drinking water access and rural welfare in Karnataka.
Yash's career trajectory illustrates the broader transition of Kannada cinema from a regional industry to a participant in pan-Indian cinema. The success of the K.G.F films, alongside contemporaries such as Rishab Shetty and the work of producers like Hombale Films, shifted national attention towards Kannada productions in terms of scale, distribution and dubbing rights. He is also one of the few Kannada stars whose films have consistently received simultaneous releases in multiple Indian languages.
