Background
AIIMS Bhubaneswar was conceived as part of the broader policy initiative to set up additional All India Institutes of Medical Sciences across the country, modelled on the original AIIMS at New Delhi. The laying of the foundation stone in 2003 marked the beginning of the project in Odisha, with the institute eventually being established in 2012. The institute was originally proposed under the name Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose All India Institute of Medical Sciences before being designated AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
As an autonomous body operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, AIIMS Bhubaneswar combines the functions of a medical college, a teaching hospital and a centre for medical research. Its placement in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, was intended to strengthen tertiary medical care and medical education in the eastern region of India.
