Early work
Kapoor's directorial debut was Aryan: Unbreakable (2006), a sports drama starring Sohail Khan. The film received a limited response at the box office.
Breakthrough
Rock On!!, released in 2008 and produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under Excel Entertainment, marked Kapoor's commercial and critical breakthrough. The film, centred on a Mumbai-based rock band reuniting after years apart, won the National Film Award for Best Hindi Film and the National Film Award for Best Audiography.
Adaptations
In 2013, Kapoor directed Kai Po Che!, an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's novel The 3 Mistakes of My Life. Set in Gujarat, the film follows three friends against the backdrop of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, the 2002 Gujarat riots and cricket. It introduced Sushant Singh Rajput to the big screen alongside Rajkummar Rao and Amit Sadh, and was screened at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival.
His next directorial venture, Fitoor (2016), was a Hindi adaptation of Charles Dickens's novel Great Expectations, set in Kashmir and starring Aditya Roy Kapur, Katrina Kaif and Tabu.
Kedarnath (2018), set against the 2013 North India floods, paired Sushant Singh Rajput with Sara Ali Khan in her acting debut. The film was produced under Kapoor's banner Guy In The Sky Pictures together with RSVP Movies.
Later projects
Kapoor directed Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021), a romantic drama starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor, which dealt with themes of gender identity. He has continued to develop projects through Guy In The Sky Pictures.
