Background
The institution traces its origins to 1978, when it was set up as Bal Vidya Vihar by Brigadier K.P. Pande, who was then serving as the Commander of the Madhya Pradesh Sub Area. The vision behind the school was to extend affordable and quality schooling to the children of defence personnel posted in and around Bhopal.
The school subsequently became the Army Public School at Bairagarh, functioning from the barracks of the 3 EME Centre. In its present form as an Army Public School, it was formally inaugurated on 17 July 1995 by Lieutenant General Chandra Shekher, AVSM, the General Officer Commanding 21 Corps, in the presence of the Founder Chairman, Brigadier Ramesh Bhatia, VSM & Bar, who was then the Commander of the MP Sub Area.

The school progressively expanded its academic offerings after the 1995 inauguration. Class X was introduced in 1997, and the senior secondary stage with Class XII commenced in 2000. Since the 2000–01 session, eleven batches have passed out from the senior secondary level.
The school was later renamed Army Public School, Bhopal. It continues to be operated by the Indian Army as part of the network of Army Public Schools that cater primarily to the children of serving and retired Army personnel, while also admitting other students subject to availability.
