Plot and themes
The film follows Ayan Ranjan, a young IPS officer posted to Lalgaon, a fictional village in Uttar Pradesh. Investigating the rape and murder of two adolescent girls and the disappearance of a third, all from a marginalised caste, Ayan encounters resistance from local police, politicians and dominant-caste villagers. The story is loosely inspired by the 2014 Badaun gang rape allegations and references the 2016 Una flogging incident, weaving them into a wider commentary on untouchability, manual scavenging and the unequal application of law.

Production
The film marked a thematic continuation of Anubhav Sinha's socially engaged phase that began with Mulk (2018). Principal photography was carried out largely in and around Lucknow and rural locations in Uttar Pradesh. British cinematographer Ewan Mulligan used a desaturated, naturalistic palette to underline the bleakness of the setting. The film was produced by Sinha's banner Benaras Mediaworks in association with Zee Studios.
Release and reception
Article 15 was released theatrically on 28 June 2019. It received broadly positive reviews from Indian critics, who praised Khurrana's performance, the writing and Sinha's direction, while some commentators debated the framing of an upper-caste protagonist as the central agent of justice in a story about Dalit victimhood. The film had a strong commercial run for a content-driven release, and was also screened at international film festivals.
Awards and recognition
- Filmfare Awards: Best Film (Critics) and Best Director (Critics) for Anubhav Sinha at the 65th Filmfare Awards.
- Multiple nominations at Screen Awards, IIFA and other Indian film awards for direction, writing and acting.
Significance
Article 15 is regarded as one of the more prominent mainstream Hindi films to directly address caste-based atrocities and constitutional questions of equality. It contributed to a wave of issue-oriented Hindi cinema in the late 2010s, alongside Sinha's other works such as Mulk and Thappad, and renewed public conversation around the implementation of anti-discrimination law in rural India.
