Background
Café Coffee Day was founded by V. G. Siddhartha, a coffee entrepreneur from Karnataka whose family had a long association with coffee plantations in the Chikmagalur region. The brand grew out of the wider Coffee Day group, which was built around an integrated coffee business spanning plantations, curing, exports, vending machines and retail outlets. The retail café format was launched to popularise café-style coffee consumption in India, then largely a tea-drinking market, and to provide an aspirational social space for younger urban consumers.
History
The first Café Coffee Day outlet was opened in Bengaluru on Brigade Road, marking one of India's earliest organised café experiences with internet access alongside coffee. Through the late 1990s and 2000s, the chain expanded rapidly across metropolitan and Tier II cities, reaching a presence in hundreds of cities and towns. At its peak, CCD operated one of the largest networks of cafés in India, with outlets in airports, malls, highways, college campuses and high streets.
The parent firm, Coffee Day Enterprises Limited, listed on Indian stock exchanges in 2015 following an initial public offering. The group also operates allied formats such as Coffee Day vending machines (Fresh & Ground) and the value-format Coffee Day Xpress kiosks.
In July 2019, founder V. G. Siddhartha was reported missing and was subsequently found dead. Following his death, the company underwent significant restructuring, including divestments of non-core assets and a reduction in the number of operating outlets, as the group worked to address debt and consolidate its retail footprint.
Operations and offerings
Café Coffee Day outlets serve a menu centred on espresso-based beverages, cold coffees, frappes, teas, snacks, sandwiches, pastries and desserts. The cafés are designed as casual meeting spaces, and the brand has long used taglines associating the café with conversation and social interaction. Coffee for the chain is sourced largely from estates in Karnataka, supported by the group's plantation and curing operations.
Related brands within the group

- Coffee Day Xpress — smaller kiosk-format outlets.
Significance
Café Coffee Day is widely credited with shaping modern café culture in India and introducing a generation of urban consumers to branded out-of-home coffee consumption. It served as an early entrant that established the template later adopted by international and domestic competitors entering the Indian market. The chain has also been notable for its scale of vertical integration, linking plantation-level coffee production with consumer retail under a single corporate group.
