Background
Davanagere district was constituted on 15 August 1997 as part of a reorganisation of districts in Karnataka undertaken during the tenure of Chief Minister J. H. Patel. It was formed primarily from the northern taluks of the erstwhile Chitradurga district, with adjustments involving neighbouring areas. The town of Davanagere had previously been an important commercial centre under both the Mysore princely state and post-Independence Karnataka, owing to its location on trade routes between northern and southern Karnataka.
Before the bifurcation that created Vijayanagara district in 2021, Davanagere shared a long boundary with Bellary along the Tungabhadra. The district is bordered by Haveri to the north-west, Shivamogga to the west, Chitradurga to the south and east, and Vijayanagara to the north and east.
Administration
The district is administered by a Deputy Commissioner and is part of the Karnataka revenue administration. It is divided into several taluks, which include:
- Davanagere
- Harihar
- Honnali
- Channagiri
- Jagalur
- Nyamati
The Davanagere City Corporation governs the urban area of the district headquarters, while smaller towns such as Harihar and Channagiri have their own urban local bodies. The district sends representatives to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from constituencies including Davanagere North, Davanagere South, Mayakonda, Channagiri, Honnali, Harihar and Jagalur, and forms part of the Davanagere Lok Sabha constituency.
Geography
The district lies on the Deccan plateau at an average elevation of around 600 metres. The terrain is largely undulating, with black cotton soil and red loam supporting agriculture. The Tungabhadra river flows along the northern and western edges of the district, and the Bhadra reservoir project provides irrigation to parts of the area through canal networks. The climate is semi-arid, with the south-west monsoon contributing the bulk of the annual rainfall.
Economy
Agriculture is the principal occupation, with major crops including paddy, maize, cotton, groundnut, sunflower, ragi, jowar and areca nut. Davanagere is among the leading maize-producing districts in Karnataka. Harihar hosts long-established industrial units, including those associated with the Kirloskar group and the former Harihar Polyfibres complex. The headquarters town historically housed numerous cotton mills and ginning units, and continues to be a centre for trade in agricultural produce.
Education
Davanagere is an established educational hub in central Karnataka. Davangere University, established in 2009, is based at Shivagangothri near the district headquarters. The town is also home to the Bapuji Educational Association, which runs medical, dental, engineering and management institutions, including the J. J. M. Medical College and the Bapuji Institute of Engineering and Technology. The Bapuji Dental College and Hospital is among the well-known dental institutions in the state.
