Geography
Etah district lies on the alluvial plain of the Ganges–Yamuna Doab. The terrain is largely flat and agricultural, with the Ganges flowing along the north-eastern margin of the district. Neighbouring districts include Aligarh, Hathras, Kasganj, Firozabad and Mainpuri. The climate is typical of the north Indian plains, with hot summers, a monsoon season, and cool winters.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Magistrate and is divided into tehsils and development blocks for revenue and rural-development purposes. For policing, the district falls under the jurisdiction of the Uttar Pradesh Police, headed locally by the Superintendent of Police. Etah is represented in the Lok Sabha through the Etah parliamentary constituency, and in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly through several Vidhan Sabha constituencies.
History
The area now constituting Etah district was historically part of various successive polities, including the Mughal Empire and later the dominions associated with the Marathas and the Nawabs of Awadh, before passing to the British East India Company in the early 19th century. Under the British, Etah was organised as a district of the North-Western Provinces and subsequently of the United Provinces. After Indian independence in 1947, it became a district of Uttar Pradesh.
In 2008, the new district of Kasganj (initially named Kanshiram Nagar) was carved out of Etah, reducing the territorial extent of the original district.
Economy
The economy of Etah is predominantly agrarian. Major crops include wheat, paddy, sugarcane, mustard, potato and pulses, supported by canal irrigation drawn from the Ganga canal system as well as tubewells. Dairying and small-scale agro-processing, including sugar and dairy units, contribute to the rural economy. Trade in agricultural produce takes place through regulated markets in Etah town and other tehsil centres.
Demographics and society
The population is largely rural, with Hindi as the principal language and Urdu also spoken. The district has a mixed religious composition dominated by Hindus, with a significant Muslim minority. Educational institutions in the district include government and private schools, degree colleges affiliated with state universities, and technical and teacher-training institutes.
Transport
Etah is connected by road through state highways linking it with Aligarh, Agra, Mainpuri and Kasganj. National Highway connectivity and railway access via stations on lines passing through the region facilitate movement of people and goods. The nearest major airports are at Agra and Delhi.
