Geography
The district lies in the upper Doab between the Yamuna and the Hindon, and is bordered by Delhi to the west and north-west, Ghaziabad district to the north, Bulandshahr district to the east, and the state of Haryana across the Yamuna to the south-west. The terrain is largely flat alluvial plain, historically used for agriculture before extensive urban development took over much of the western portion of the district.
History
The territory now constituting the district was earlier part of Bulandshahr and Ghaziabad districts. Gautam Buddha Nagar was carved out as a separate district on 9 June 1997 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, primarily to provide focused administration for the rapidly growing urban centres of Noida and Greater Noida.
Noida (the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority) was established on 17 April 1976 under the Uttar Pradesh Industrial Area Development Act, 1976, during the period of the Emergency. Greater Noida was conceived in the early 1990s under the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA), constituted in 1991, to plan a large satellite township along the Delhi–Noida–Agra corridor.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Magistrate. For revenue and general administration it is divided into three tehsils — Gautam Buddha Nagar (Sadar), Dadri, and Jewar. Urban planning and development in much of the district fall under three statutory authorities: the Noida Authority, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority, and the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).
Economy and infrastructure
Gautam Buddha Nagar is among the most industrialised and economically significant districts of Uttar Pradesh. Noida hosts large clusters of information technology and IT-enabled services firms, electronics and mobile-phone manufacturing, automobile components, and media and broadcasting offices. Greater Noida includes auto manufacturing facilities, educational institutions, and the Buddh International Circuit, which hosted the Indian Grand Prix of Formula One from 2011 to 2013.
Major transport links include the Yamuna Expressway connecting Greater Noida with Agra, the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway, the DND Flyway to Delhi, and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. The Delhi Metro's Blue and Magenta lines serve Noida, while the Aqua Line of the Noida Metro connects Noida and Greater Noida. The Noida International Airport at Jewar is being developed as a greenfield airport for the NCR.
Education
The district hosts a number of higher education institutions, including Gautam Buddha University at Greater Noida, established by the
