History
Historically, the area formed part of the Santhal Pargana region, which was constituted as a separate administrative unit by the British colonial government in 1855 following the Santhal rebellion (Santhal Hul). Godda was carved out as a separate district from Santhal Pargana in the post-independence period as part of administrative reorganisation. When Jharkhand was created on 15 November 2000 by separation from Bihar, Godda became one of the districts of the new state.
Economy
The economy of Godda district is predominantly agrarian, with paddy, wheat, maize, and pulses being the main crops. The district is also significant for its mineral wealth, especially coal, with the Rajmahal coalfields extending into the area. The Lalmatia open-cast coal mine, operated by Eastern Coalfields Limited, is among the largest in India and is located in the district. Godda has also drawn attention for the Godda thermal power project developed by Adani Power, which exports electricity to Bangladesh.

Culture
The cultural life of the district reflects the traditions of the Santhal Pargana region, including tribal festivals, folk music, and dance forms associated with the Santhal community. Hindu festivals are also widely observed. Local fairs and weekly markets (haats) play an important role in social and economic exchange.
