Overview

Gondwana University is a state public university located at Gadchiroli in the eastern Vidarbha region of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It serves the predominantly tribal districts of Gadchiroli and Chandrapur, an area historically associated with the Gondi-speaking Adivasi communities from whom the university takes its name. Background

The university was created by bifurcating the territorial jurisdiction of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, with the aim of bringing higher education administration closer to the tribal-majority and forested districts of eastern Vidarbha. Gadchiroli and Chandrapur, where the university operates, are among Maharashtra's most remote districts and have long faced challenges relating to access to higher education, geographical isolation, and developmental backwardness.

The institution is named after Gondwana, the cultural and historical region of the Gond people, who form a significant share of the population in its catchment area. As a result, the university has placed emphasis on supporting students from tribal and rural backgrounds within its affiliated college network.

Academics

Gondwana University offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes through its on-campus departments and a network of affiliated colleges. Programmes are offered across faculties such as arts, commerce, science, social sciences, education, and management. The university also conducts research and awards doctoral degrees in various disciplines.
