Background

Mehta began his career in television in the 1990s, working on food and lifestyle programming before moving to feature filmmaking. His early directorial work included Jayate (1999) and Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!! (2000), the latter starring Manoj Bajpayee, with whom he would later collaborate on several acclaimed projects.

Early films

After his initial features, Mehta directed films across genres in the 2000s, including Chhal (2002) and Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai? (2002). This period was marked by mixed commercial outcomes, after which he stepped back from mainstream filmmaking before returning with a more issue-oriented body of work.

Resurgence with Shahid

Shahid (2012), based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi, marked a significant turning point in Mehta's career. The film starred Rajkummar Rao in the title role and won the National Film Award for Best Direction, while Rao won the National Film Award for Best Actor. The film established a long-running creative partnership between Mehta and Rao.

Continued work in social drama

Mehta followed Shahid with Citylights (2014), an adaptation of the British film Metro Manila, set against the backdrop of migrant life in Mumbai. Aligarh (2015), starring Manoj Bajpayee, was based on the case of Professor Ramchandra Siras of Aligarh Muslim University and dealt with issues of sexuality, privacy and institutional discrimination.

Subsequent films included Simran (2017) starring Kangana Ranaut, Omerta (2017) starring Rajkummar Rao as Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, and Faraaz (2022), based on the 2016 Dhaka café attack.

Streaming work

Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, released on SonyLIV in 2020, dramatised the securities fraud associated with stockbroker Harshad Mehta and was based on the book The Scam by journalists Sucheta Dalal and Debashis Basu. The series, starring Pratik Gandhi, received wide critical acclaim and is regarded as a landmark in Indian streaming drama. Mehta later produced Scam 2003: The Telgi Story within the same anthology framework. His series Scoop (2023), produced for Netflix, was based on the memoir of journalist Jigna Vora.
