Background
Indian Oil traces its origins to the early years of independent India's effort to build a self-reliant petroleum sector. It was formed through the merger of Indian Oil Company Limited and Indian Refineries Limited, bringing together marketing and refining operations under a single national entity. Over the decades, it has grown into a vertically integrated energy company with operations spanning refineries, an extensive cross-country pipeline network, retail outlets, aviation fuel stations, and LPG bottling plants.
Indian Oil markets transportation fuels (petrol, diesel, aviation turbine fuel), cooking gas under the Indane brand, lubricants under the Servo brand, bitumen, and a range of petrochemicals. Its retail presence is among the largest in India, with fuel stations spread across urban and rural areas.
Operations
Refining
The corporation owns and operates several refineries located across India, refining crude oil into petroleum products for domestic consumption and export. Through its subsidiary Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL), it has additional refining capacity in southern India.
Pipelines
Indian Oil operates one of the largest networks of crude oil, product, and gas pipelines in India, used to transport crude to refineries and finished products to demand centres.
Marketing
The company distributes petroleum products through fuel retail outlets, LPG distributors, consumer pumps, lubricant dealers, and aviation fuel stations serving domestic and international airlines.
Petrochemicals and gas
Indian Oil produces petrochemical intermediates and polymers, and is active in the natural gas business including the import and marketing of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and city gas distribution through joint ventures.
Exploration and alternative energy
The corporation participates in upstream exploration and production both in India and abroad, often through consortia. It has also invested in renewable energy, biofuels, hydrogen, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure as part of energy transition initiatives.

Significance
Indian Oil plays a central role in India's energy security, supplying a substantial share of the country's petroleum product demand. It has been conferred Maharatna status by the Government of India, granting it greater operational and financial autonomy. The Indane LPG brand has been a key vehicle for the expansion of clean cooking fuel access in Indian households, including under government schemes promoting LPG connections in rural areas.
The company is consistently ranked among the largest Indian corporations by revenue and features in global rankings of major energy companies.
Research and development
Indian Oil operates a research and development centre at Faridabad, Haryana, which works on lubricants formulation, fuel additives, refining process improvements, alternative fuels, and emission-related technologies. Several of its products are based on in-house research.
