Etymology

The name Indore is derived from Indreshwar, a temple dedicated to the deity Indra that historically stood in the area. Earlier forms of the name include Indrapur and Indur.

History

Indore's documented history is closely tied to the rise of the Maratha Confederacy in central India. In the 18th century, the Holkar dynasty, founded by Malhar Rao Holkar, established a state with Indore as a key town. Under Ahilyabai Holkar, who ruled from 1767 to 1795 from nearby Maheshwar, the Holkar realm became known for its administration, temple-building, and patronage of trade.

During the British period, Indore was the capital of the princely state of Indore (Holkar State) and later the temporary capital of the post-independence state of Madhya Bharat from 1948 until its merger into Madhya Pradesh in 1956. Maharaja Tukoji Rao Holkar III and his successors expanded urban infrastructure, while institutions such as Daly College, established in 1870, were created to educate the children of the regional aristocracy.

Geography and Climate

Indore lies on the Malwa Plateau, at an elevation of around 550 metres above sea level, on the banks of the Khan and Saraswati rivers. The Vindhya Range lies to the south. The climate is broadly subtropical, with hot summers, a southwest monsoon between June and September, and mild winters. The plateau location moderates summer temperatures compared with much of north India.

Administration

Civic administration is carried out by the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC), one of the oldest municipal bodies in central India. The Indore Development Authority (IDA) handles urban planning and major infrastructure projects. The city is part of the Indore Lok Sabha constituency and contains several Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly constituencies.

Economy

Indore is the principal commercial and financial hub of Madhya Pradesh. Major sectors include automobile and auto components, pharmaceuticals, textiles, food processing, information technology, and trading in agricultural commodities such as soybean, wheat, and pulses. The Pithampur industrial area, located on the city's outskirts, is one of central India's largest industrial estates and houses automotive and engineering plants. The Special Economic Zone at Pithampur and the IT parks at Crystal IT Park and the Madhya Pradesh IT SEZ have attracted technology and back-office firms.

Education and Research

Indore hosts several institutions of national importance:

  • Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIM Indore), established in 1996.
  • Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore), established in 2009.
  • Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV), the state university serving the Indore region, founded in 1964.
