Background

Atlee, known for Tamil films such as Theri, Mersal and Bigil, conceptualised Jawan as his first Hindi-language directorial venture. The project was officially announced in 2021, with the title and a teaser revealed by Red Chillies Entertainment. The film was Shah Rukh Khan's second theatrical release of 2023, following Pathaan, which was released in January of the same year.

Principal photography took place across multiple Indian locations, including Mumbai and Chennai, with portions filmed abroad. Anirudh Ravichander, a frequent Atlee collaborator, composed the soundtrack and background score, marking his first full-length Hindi film score for a Shah Rukh Khan project.

Plot premise

The film follows a man, played by Shah Rukh Khan, who leads a band of women in carrying out a series of acts targeting corrupt figures, drawing attention to systemic issues such as agrarian distress, public health failures and corruption. The narrative incorporates a parallel storyline involving the protagonist's father, also portrayed by Khan, establishing the dual-role structure central to the film. Vijay Sethupathi appears as the principal antagonist, an arms dealer.

Cast

  • Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role as Azad and Vikram Rathore
  • Nayanthara as Narmada Rai, in her Hindi film debut
  • Vijay Sethupathi as Kaalie Gaikwad
  • Deepika Padukone as Aishwarya, in an extended special appearance
  • Priyamani, Sanya Malhotra, Girija Oak, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Lehar Khan and Aaliyah Qureishi as members of Azad's team
  • Sunil Grover, Ridhi Dogra and Eijaz Khan in supporting roles

Release

Jawan released theatrically worldwide on 7 September 2023 in standard, IMAX and other premium formats. In addition to the original Hindi version, the film was simultaneously released in Tamil and Telugu dubbed versions. An extended cut of the film was made available on the streaming platform Netflix subsequent to the theatrical run.

Reception and significance

The film performed strongly at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2023 and contributing to a year of commercial revival for Hindi cinema following a series of underperforming releases in 2022. Along with Pathaan and Dunki, Jawan formed part of Shah Rukh Khan's return to lead roles after a hiatus from theatrical releases.

Critically, the film was noted for its action set pieces, Anirudh Ravichander's score, Vijay Sethupathi's performance as the antagonist, and Shah Rukh Khan's dual portrayal. Its incorporation of socio-political themes within a mainstream commercial framework drew commentary in the Indian press.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by Anirudh Ravichander and released by T-Series. Tracks from the film, including Zinda Banda and Chaleya, received wide circulation on streaming platforms.
