Jayashankar Bhupalpally district is an administrative district in the north-eastern part of the Indian state of Telangana. It was carved out as part of the comprehensive reorganisation of districts undertaken by the Government of Telangana in October 2016, when the number of districts in the state was increased from ten to thirty-one. The district takes its name from the Telangana ideologue and historian Kothapalli Jayashankar, with Bhupalpally serving as its headquarters.

Background and formation
The district was constituted on 11 October 2016 by bifurcating territory primarily from the erstwhile Warangal district. The reorganisation, undertaken under the administration of Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, aimed to bring administration closer to citizens by creating smaller, more manageable units. In 2019, the district was further reorganised when Mulugu was separated as an independent district, reducing the geographical extent of Jayashankar Bhupalpally.
Geography
The district lies on the north-eastern edge of Telangana. It is bordered by Mancherial and Peddapalli districts to the north, the state of Maharashtra to the north-east across the Godavari, Mulugu to the south, and Hanumakonda and adjoining districts to the west. The Godavari river flows along part of its boundary, and the terrain includes forested tracts that are part of the broader Dandakaranya belt.
Economy
The economy of the district is largely agrarian, with paddy, cotton and maize among the principal crops cultivated under both rain-fed and irrigated conditions. Coal mining is a significant industrial activity; the area hosts operations of The Singareni Collieries Company Limited, particularly around Bhupalpally, which has historically been a coal-bearing tract. The Kakatiya Thermal Power Station at Chelpur, operated by the Telangana State Power Generation Corporation, is also located within the district.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Collector appointed by the state government, supported by a Superintendent of Police for law and order. For revenue administration, the district is divided into revenue divisions and mandals, with mandals further subdivided into gram panchayats and revenue villages. Bhupalpally serves as the principal urban centre and seat of district-level offices.
Culture and notable places
The region has historical associations with the Kakatiya dynasty, which ruled large parts of present-day Telangana from nearby Warangal. Sites of religious and tourist interest in and around the district include temples and pilgrimage centres along the Godavari basin. Following the 2019 reorganisation, several prominent attractions such as Ramappa Temple and Laknavaram Lake fall within the newly formed Mulugu district.
