Jehanabad district is an administrative district in the state of Bihar in eastern India. Geography
Jehanabad district lies on the southern Gangetic plain of Bihar. It is bounded by Patna district to the north, Nalanda district to the east, Gaya district to the south, and Arwal district to the west. The terrain is largely flat and alluvial, drained by rivers such as the Phalgu (locally also linked to the Dardha) and smaller tributaries that support agriculture in the region. The climate is typical of the middle Gangetic plain, with hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and cool, dry winters.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Magistrate and is divided into community development blocks and revenue subdivisions. Jehanabad town serves as the principal urban and administrative centre. For parliamentary elections, the area is associated with the Jehanabad Lok Sabha constituency, while several Vidhan Sabha (state assembly) constituencies fall within or overlap with the district's boundaries.
History
The region that comprises present-day Jehanabad has been part of the historical Magadh heartland, which was central to ancient empires such as the Mauryas and the Guptas. In modern administrative history, Jehanabad was carved out as a separate district from Gaya district on 1 August 1986. In 2001, the western portion of Jehanabad was further reorganised to form the new Arwal district, reducing Jehanabad's territorial extent.
Economy
The economy of Jehanabad is predominantly agrarian. Paddy, wheat, pulses and vegetables are among the principal crops, supported by canal and tube-well irrigation. Small-scale trade, agro-based activities and government services contribute to employment, while road and rail links to Patna and Gaya integrate the district with the wider regional economy.
Transport
Jehanabad is connected to Patna and Gaya by National Highway 83 (formerly NH 83), which is one of the principal road links of southern Bihar. The district also lies on the Patna–Gaya railway line, with Jehanabad railway station serving as the main rail head. The nearest major airport is Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport in Patna.
Demographics and culture
The population is largely rural, with Hindi and Magahi being the commonly spoken languages. The district shares the cultural traditions of the Magadh region, including local festivals, folk practices and cuisine typical of southern Bihar. Hinduism is the predominant religion, with a Muslim minority and smaller communities of other faiths.
Significance
Beyond its administrative role, Jehanabad's significance lies in its location within the historic Magadh belt, its agricultural base, and its connectivity between Patna and Gaya. The district has also featured in discussions of rural development and law-and-order initiatives in central Bihar during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
