Early life and background
Juhi Chawla was born on 13 November 1967 in Ambala, Haryana, into a Punjabi Khatri family. Her father, S. Chawla, was an officer in the Indian Revenue Service, and her family relocated several times during her childhood before settling in Mumbai. She attended Fort Convent School and later graduated from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.
In 1984, she won the Femina Miss India contest and represented India at the Miss Universe pageant held in Miami, where she was awarded the title of Best Costume.
Acting career
Debut and breakthrough (1986–1990)
Chawla made her film debut with the Kannada film Premaloka (1986), directed by V. Ravichandran. Her Hindi debut came with Sultanat (1986). She achieved widespread fame with Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), produced by Nasir Hussain, which became a landmark romantic film of the era and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.
Stardom in the 1990s
Through the 1990s, Chawla established herself as one of the highest-paid female stars of the Hindi film industry. She is also a co-owner, with Shah Rukh Khan, of the Indian Premier League cricket franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, acquired in 2008 through Red Chillies Entertainment and the Mehta group.
