Juhi Chawla

Juhi Chawla is an Indian actress, film producer, and former beauty queen who established herself as one of the leading stars of Hindi cinema during the late 1980s and 1990s. She rose to prominence after winning the Femina Miss India title in 1984 and made her acting breakthrough with the romantic film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), opposite Aamir Khan. Over a career spanning more than three decades, she has appeared in films across Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Bengali cinema.

Early life and background

Juhi Chawla was born on 13 November 1967 in Ambala, Haryana, into a Punjabi Khatri family. Her father, S. Chawla, was an officer in the Indian Revenue Service, and her family relocated several times during her childhood before settling in Mumbai. She attended Fort Convent School and later graduated from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics in Mumbai.

In 1984, she won the Femina Miss India contest and represented India at the Miss Universe pageant held in Miami, where she was awarded the title of Best Costume.

Acting career

Debut and breakthrough (1986–1990)

Chawla made her film debut with the Kannada film Premaloka (1986), directed by V. Ravichandran. Her Hindi debut came with Sultanat (1986). She achieved widespread fame with Mansoor Khan's Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), produced by Nasir Hussain, which became a landmark romantic film of the era and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Stardom in the 1990s

Through the 1990s, Chawla established herself as one of the highest-paid female stars of the Hindi film industry. Notable films include Pratibandh (1990), Bol Radha Bol (1992), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993)—for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress—Aaina (1993), Darr (1993), Yes Boss (1997), Ishq (1997), and Duplicate (1998). She frequently paired with Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and Sunny Deol.

Chawla continued to take on a variety of roles, including comic and supporting parts. She received the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian for Jhankaar Beats (2003). In 1999, Chawla co-founded the production company Dreamz Unlimited with Shah Rukh Khan and director Aziz Mirza. The banner produced films such as Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000), Aśoka (2001), and Chalte Chalte (2003). She is also a co-owner, with Shah Rukh Khan, of the Indian Premier League cricket franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, acquired in 2008 through Red Chillies Entertainment and the Mehta group.

Personal life

Juhi Chawla married industrialist Jay Mehta on 25 December 1995. The couple has two children, Jahnavi and Arjun. She has spoken publicly about balancing her film career with family life and is known for her low-profile personal conduct.

Activism and public causes

Chawla has been associated with environmental and social causes, including campaigns related to clean energy, anti-tobacco advocacy, and protection of children. In 2021, she filed a petition in the Delhi High Court regarding the rollout of 5G mobile technology in India, which was dismissed by the court.
