Background

The reorganisation of districts in Andhra Pradesh was undertaken by the state government under Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, with the stated objective of aligning district boundaries with parliamentary constituencies and bringing administration closer to citizens. As part of this exercise, the historically large East Godavari district was split into three units: Kakinada district, a redrawn East Godavari district with headquarters at Rajamahendravaram, and the tribal-majority Alluri Sitharama Raju district (carved jointly with the former Visakhapatnam district).

Geography

Kakinada district lies in the deltaic region of the Godavari River, with a long coastline along the Bay of Bengal. The district includes a mix of fertile alluvial plains, mangrove ecosystems, and coastal terrain. The Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its mangrove forests and estuarine biodiversity, lies within the district. The terrain supports extensive paddy cultivation, aquaculture, and coconut plantations characteristic of the Godavari delta.

Administration

The district is administered by a District Collector and is divided into revenue divisions and mandals. Kakinada city, the administrative seat, is governed by the Kakinada Municipal Corporation and serves as the principal urban centre. Other significant towns in the district include Peddapuram, Samalkota, Pithapuram, and Tuni.

Economy

The district's economy is anchored by Kakinada, which hosts one of India's major ports. Kakinada Anchorage Port and Kakinada Deep Water Port handle agricultural commodities, fertilisers, edible oils, and petroleum products. The Kakinada Special Economic Zone and adjacent industrial corridors host petroleum, fertiliser, and natural gas industries, partly drawing on offshore reserves in the Krishna–Godavari basin. Agriculture, fisheries, and aquaculture remain major contributors to rural livelihoods.

Education and institutions

Kakinada is an established educational centre in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The city is home to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada (JNTUK), one of the principal technical universities in the state. Other notable institutions include the Government Medical College and several engineering and pharmacy colleges.

Transport

The district is served by the Howrah–Chennai trunk railway line via Samalkota Junction, with branch services to Kakinada. National Highway 16 (part of the Golden Quadrilateral) passes through the district, connecting it with Visakhapatnam to the north and Vijayawada to the south. Kakinada also has a domestic airport at Madhurapudi (shared with the regional Godavari area) and is connected by coastal shipping through its port complex.

Culture

The district lies in the cultural heartland of coastal Andhra Pradesh, with strong traditions in Telugu literature, classical music, and temple architecture. Pithapuram, an ancient town in the district, is associated with the Kukkuteswara Swamy temple and is regarded as one of the eighteen Shakti Peethas. Annavaram, home to the S
