Background

The series was launched at a time when Balaji Telefilms dominated Indian prime-time television with family dramas such as Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. Kasautii Zindagii Kay distinguished itself by focusing on a romantic pairing rather than a joint-family matriarch, and by making extensive use of melodrama, plot twists involving look-alikes, plastic surgery, amnesia and rebirth.

Original series (2001–2008)

The first version of the show premiered in 2001 on StarPlus. It centred on the love story of Anurag Basu and Prerna Sharma, played by Cezanne Khan and Shweta Tiwari, whose pairing became one of the most popular on Indian television. The narrative followed their relationship across years and circumstances, including the antagonism of Komolika, a character played by Urvashi Dholakia that became iconic for its portrayal of the television villainess.

Over its run, the show saw cast changes, with actors such as Hiten Tejwani later taking on the role of Anurag. The original series concluded in 2008, ending a continuous run of several years on StarPlus.

Principal cast of the original series

  • Shweta Tiwari as Prerna Sharma
  • Cezanne Khan as Anurag Basu
  • Hiten Tejwani as Anurag Basu (later)
  • Urvashi Dholakia as Komolika
  • Ronit Roy as Mr. Bajaj

Reboot (2018–2020)

Balaji Telefilms revived the franchise as Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2, which premiered on StarPlus in 2018. The reboot retained the core love triangle of Anurag, Prerna and Mr. Bajaj while updating the setting and styling for a contemporary audience. Parth Samthaan and Erica Fernandes were cast as Anurag and Prerna, while Hina Khan was introduced as the new Komolika, later replaced by Aamna Sharif. Karan Singh Grover joined the show as Mr. Bajaj.

The reboot concluded in 2020, with its later episodes affected by the production halt caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in India.

Principal cast of the reboot

  • Parth Samthaan as Anurag Basu
  • Erica Fernandes as Prerna Sharma
  • Karan Singh Grover as Mr. Bajaj
  • Hina Khan and later Aamna Sharif as Komolika

Title song and identity

The title track, which opens with the line "Kasautii zindagii kay", was composed for the series and became closely associated with the show's brand. The opening sequence and music were retained, in adapted form, in the reboot, reinforcing continuity between the two versions.

Reception and significance

The original series was among the highest-rated Hindi general entertainment shows of its era and contributed to the popular image of Balaji Telefilms as the leading producer of Indian saas-bahu and romantic dramas. The character of Komolika, in particular, entered popular culture as shorthand for the scheming television antagonist. The show influenced subsequent Hindi soap operas in narrative structure, costume and music design, and was dubbed and remade in several South Asian languages.
