Background

Kundali Bhagya was conceived as a spin-off of Kumkum Bhagya, which itself was loosely inspired by Jane Austen's novel Sense and Sensibility. While Kumkum Bhagya centres on the elder sisters Pragya and Bulbul, Kundali Bhagya shifts focus to the younger Arora sisters, Preeta and Srishti. The narrative is built around themes of family bonds, mistaken identities, romantic conflict, and household intrigue, which are characteristic of Indian prime-time soap operas.

Plot

The early storyline traces Preeta Arora, a physiotherapist, and her sister Srishti, who discover that their estranged biological father is connected to the affluent Luthra family. The narrative develops the relationship between Preeta and Karan Luthra, a cricketer and the second son of the Luthra household, against a backdrop of misunderstandings, family politics, and antagonists who seek to disrupt the union. Subsequent tracks have introduced generational leaps and new character arcs, a common storytelling device in Indian daily soaps.

Cast

The show has featured several actors in lead and supporting roles over its run, with key roles including:

  • Shraddha Arya as Preeta Arora Luthra
  • Dheeraj Dhoopar as Karan Luthra (original lead)
  • Manit Joura as Rishabh Luthra
  • Anjum Fakih as Srishti Arora
  • Supriya Shukla as Sarla Arora
  • Sanjay Gagnani as Prithvi Malhotra
  • Ruhi Chaturvedi as Sherlyn Khurana
  • Shakti Anand as Rakhi Luthra's husband (Mahesh Luthra)
  • Paras Kalnawat and Baseer Ali in subsequent leap arcs

Production

The series is produced by Balaji Telefilms, one of India's most prolific television production houses. Filming has primarily taken place in Mumbai. Like several Zee TV programmes, the show was briefly suspended during March–July 2020 owing to restrictions on television production caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, before resuming with new episodes.

Reception and significance

Kundali Bhagya has been among the highest-rated Hindi general entertainment serials on Indian television since its premiere. According to weekly Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India ratings, the show has frequently appeared at or near the top of the Hindi GEC charts during its run, often outperforming its parent series. Its success contributed to Zee TV's ratings competitiveness during the late 2010s and early 2020s.

The show has received nominations and awards at industry events such as the Zee Rishtey Awards and the Indian Television Academy Awards, with recognition for its lead actors and ensemble.

International broadcast

Dubbed versions of the series have been broadcast in several international markets, including parts of Africa and South-East Asia, through Zee Entertainment Enterprises' international channels. The show is also available for streaming on ZEE5.
