Overview
Mahavir Singh Phogat is an Indian amateur wrestler and wrestling coach from Haryana, best known for training his daughters and nieces to become international wrestlers at a time when women's participation in the sport was uncommon in rural India. Background
Mahavir Singh Phogat belongs to the Jat community of Haryana, a region with a long tradition of akhara-based wrestling. He trained as an amateur wrestler in his youth and competed at the state level, but did not progress to a major international career. He later turned to coaching, with the explicit aim of producing an Indian wrestler capable of winning international medals.
In a social environment where girls in rural Haryana were rarely permitted to take up combat sports, Phogat decided to train his daughters in wrestling. He established a training routine at his home and at a small akhara in Balali, where the girls trained alongside boys. The decision attracted considerable local resistance in the early years.
Coaching Career
Phogat coached his four daughters — Geeta, Babita, Ritu and Sangeeta — and his two nieces, Vinesh and Priyanka, the daughters of his late brother. The training emphasised early-morning conditioning, traditional mud-pit wrestling and later transition to mat wrestling in line with international competition standards.

The 2016 Hindi-language film Dangal, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, dramatised the story of Phogat training his daughters Geeta and Babita. Aamir Khan played the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat. The film became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of its time and brought wide public attention to the family's coaching tradition. Phogat's autobiography, co-authored with sports journalist Saurabh Duggal and titled Akhada, was published around the same period.
